Veneers Q & A

What are veneers?

A veneer is a thin shell of porcelain or resin that is bonded to the surface of teeth to correct flaws and/or offer protection. Veneers can completely change your smile and give you bright, white, even teeth in a very short period of time.

What are the benefits of porcelain veneers?

Porcelain is extremely durable l--stronger than resin or composites. For that reason, porcelain veneers are the longest lasting type of veneers. They can easily last for 10-15 years. Porcelain veneers also provide the most natural look. They are virtually indistinguishable from natural surrounding teeth. Another benefit, they are impervious to stains or cracks because of its strength and the glaze applied after treatment.

How are veneers applied to my teeth?

When you consult with Dr. Tsegay, explain your goals and how you would like your teeth to look. Dr. Tsegay is your partner in your smile transformation. She then takes X-rays of the areas you would like to improve and determines if you are a candidate for veneers.

At the second visit, Dr. Tsegay uses a local anesthetic to numb the area she’ll work on. She takes off a wafer-thin layer of the enamel on the outside of your affected teeth. She creates a model of those teeth; a dental lab then manufactures veneers to the exact specification of Dr. Tsegay. You receive a temporary veneer until your permanent veneers come back from the lab.

In a week or two, when the veneers are ready, Dr. Tsegay places the veneers on the affected teeth very softly to determine if the fit and color are appropriate. She can use instruments to adjust the veneers if needed. The next step is cleaning the teeth, affixing an adhesive, and cementing the veneers to your teeth. She then shines a curing light on the veneer so that it bonds to your tooth very quickly.  You’ll be smiling when you see Dr. Tsegay’s magic in the mirror after the work is done.
